On 27 February 2011, İzmir hosted another ceremony for the Gebze-İzmir Motorway Project, one of the biggest infrastructure investments in Turkey and started on the Dilovası-İzmit side 4 months before.
Mr. Binali Yıldırım, the Minister of Transportation, who attended the ceremony, stated that the project had been inaugurated on 28 October 2010 at a groundbreaking ceremony in Gebze and that the groundbreaking ceremony of the project’s İzmir leg was held today upon the direction of Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Prime Minister.
Travel time from İzmir to İstanbul will be reduced to 3.5 - 4 hours from current 8 - 10 hours, from İzmir to Bursa will be reduced to 2.5 - 3 hours and from İzmir to Balıkesir will be reduced to 1-1.5 hours. This new motorway project will shorten the route by around 140 km, compared with the existing highway, and 870 million Turkish Liras will be saved from vehicle operation costs.
